In a move that has shocked his fans and the Indian music industry, popular singer Arijit Singh has vowed never to sing for films again. The news, which was announced via his social media platforms on Tuesday, comes as 38-year-old Rajput is widely seen as one of the most popular voices in Hindi cinema.
“I am calling it off. It’s been a beautiful journey,” Singh wrote, “but no new playback singing for me further.” He thanked listeners for their long-time support and said the decision was very personal.
Though retired from playback singing, Singh reassured fans that there’ll always be plenty of music coming their way. He added he will still be making music as a solo artist and also fulfil all existing confirmed shows.
“Music has always been my destiny. I will still keep learning and experimenting, and doing stuff on my own as a tiny artist. I have a few unreleased songs you’re going to hear my voice on in the next couple of weeks,” he added, making it clear that he is not retiring from music entirely.
No reason was given for the move, but fans reacted emotionally online, flooding the comments section of the announcement with disbelief and appeals. Many accused him of being hasty and advised him to think again.
The journey of Arijit Singh has been phenomenal. He made his debut as a playback singer in 2011 with the song “Phir Mohabbat” from Murder 2. His life changed for good in 2013, with the signature song “Tum Hi Ho” from Aashiqui 2 getting all the popularity and making him a name to reckon with.
Over the years, Singh became synonymous with romance and emotions in Bollywood as he lent voice to heartfelt tracks such as “Channa Mereya”, “Agar Tum Saath Ho”, “Raabta”, “Gerua”, “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil”, “Kesariya” and “Chaleya”. He has lent his voice to chartbusters filmed on top stars such as Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh.
Apart from Hindi, Singh has performed in other Indian languages including Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Marathi. He has received numerous scholarships , such as Jai Hind, Memon & Kalyanji Anandji, and Most of his work has been collaborated with some of the best composers in the industry. He has also won the Filmfare Awards Best Male Playback Singer category.
He gained worldwide popularity in July 2025 when he became the most-streamed artist on Spotify, taking over from international artists such as Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran with a total of over 151 million followers.
